PLANNING approval has been granted for council plans which will see nearly 50 new homes and a care facility developed in west Reading.

Following a planning meeting last night (Wednesday, December 6), Reading Borough Council has announced that its plans for affordable housing and an adult care facility are set to go ahead.

The plan currently has approval for 17 affordable homes to be built on Amethyst Lane, alongside a new adult care respite facility for residents with learning disabilities.

There are also proposals for a further 30 affordable homes to be developed at another site in Dwyer Road in Southcote.

Permission was approved for both developments after the council completed the relevant legal agreements at the planning meeting, with both now set to go ahead.

Plans will see 10 three-bed homes and 7 four-bed homes built at Amethyst Lane, and 15 one-bed, 8 three-bed, 6 four-bed homes, plus an extra five-bed home, built at Dwyer Road.

Both will be installed with carbon-cutting features as well as car and cycle provisions and landscaped to encourage biodiversity.

They form part of a council investment into affordable housing totalling more than £110m, which would see around 400 homes developed in Reading by 2025.

Those investments will include 62 homes planned for the former site of the Central Pool in Battle Street, and 15 new homes in the former site of Arthur Hill Swimming Pool on Kings Road.

Ellie Emberson, Reading Borough Council’s lead councillor for housing, said: “We are delivering high quality family housing on Council owned sites which have previously been used for other facilities.

“The developments in Southcote will provide much needed high quality affordable council housing. It demonstrates our continued strong commitment to make the best use of our land to deliver new housing opportunities for residents in our town.”

Paul Gittings, Reading Borough Council’s lead councillor for adult social care, said: “Respite care facilities are important for our residents, and this is an example of our commitment to provide the right care, in the right place at the right time with investment into Adult Social Care services.”
