WITH winter temperatures gradually dropping, Thames Water is offering top tips to protect water pipes ahead of the coming freeze.
Pipes can be at risk of leaks or bursts after cold snaps, and if they burst on private property, they are the homeowners’ responsibility and can cost hundreds of pounds to fix.
Thames Water is sharing practical tips on how people can protect their homes when temperatures drop and more rain can fall.
The advice can help avoid broken boilers, leaks and bursts.
During the winter months cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and expand which causes cracks and splits.

The average cost to repair a leaking pipe in the United Kingdom is £330.
Sarah Holland, at Thames Water, said: “When temperatures drop there are a lot of small things we can all do to help keep our homes warm and protect them from damage.

“Our easy and practical winter readiness tips can make a big difference over the winter.”
To prepare for winter, people can insulate pipes (for around £1m a metre2 for a typical household’s internal pipework), and they should remember that outdoor and garden pipes need insulating too.
It’s a good idea to know where the stop tap is; this can limit property damage if a pipe bursts or leaks.
Bleeding radiator valves releases trapped air from the system, which allows hot water to flow freely and ensures optimal performance; trapped air makes radiators less efficient and can increase heating costs.
Fixing dripping taps and leaky toilets can save money on a water bill, particularly if there is a water meter.
And clearing drains and gutters is a good idea too.
Finally, it is sensible to have the number of a qualified emergency plumber to hand in case of emergencies, and to check whether home insurance covers leaking or burst pipes.
