A BROWNIE group in Reading celebrated eight decades of fun, learning, and building skills last week.
The 2nd Tilehurst Brownies group marked its 80th year with a party, joined by current and former Brownies, leaders, and helpers.
They were also joined by special guest Iris, 90, who visited the group after having been the group’s Brown Owl– the group leader– more than 30 years ago.
The current Brown Owl, Val Roberts, has worked with the group for more than 35 years, helping the girls to build skills, learn, and socialise.
Attendees also donned old uniforms from the history of the Brownies.
Originally called Rosebuds, Brownies are scouting groups for girls, often between 8 and 12 years old, first organised in 1914.
Attendees work towards gaining interest badges, which denote the building of skills in areas such as survival and preparation, charity work and campaigning, cooking and crafts, as well as badges denoting achievement in sports and activities or participation in national and international events.
