Ruben Selles is relishing the challenge of an opening day trip to Birmingham City to open the League One season.
The Royals will face the Blues, who were relegated from the Championship last campaign.
Birmingham have spent big throughout the summer transfer window in hope of winning promotion straight back to the Championship, and so far have splashed out around £15m.
Speaking about Saturday’s opponents, Selles said: “They are a good team and have been configuring a really powerful squad and it will be a good challenge for us, as it was playing Portsmouth and Derby last season.
“Everyone invests the money they have or want in the club as long as they can be sustainable. Not many clubs can support that level of finance.
“ The league is as good as it was. Sometimes you need money to create good teams, sometimes you have a good academy and you can create a good team.
“There are lots of different ways to do it. But it’s played by 11 players and about which team is better not how much money you spend.”
Reading are currently the only team in the entire Football League who have yet to make a single addition to their squad.
The club is currently under a transfer embargo which limits them to only signing free agents or loans, but they cannot currently sign any players due to the ongoing takeover saga.
