RESIDENTS in south Reading have a fresh place to put wheels to concrete as a new skate park has opened.
The John Rabson’s Recreation Ground has seen the opening of new facilities for fans of skateboarding, BMX, scooters, and rollerblades.
The park in Whitley represents a £375,000 investment paid for through a combination of Community Infrastructure Levy and council funding.
It features bowled miniramp, quarterpipes, flatbanks and volcano, as well as a split-level street area including an inline hip, driveway, bank-to-curb with quarterpipes, and banks at each end of the park.
It also features a ‘super-sized’ rail and grind ledge and designated seating area for spectators.
The design was directly influenced by feedback from local riders providing an inclusive space for beginners and seasoned skaters alike.
The official grand opening celebration which will be attended by Mayor of Reading, Cllr Mpofu Coles, will take place on Wednesday, July 30, at John Rabson Recreation Ground.
The event will feature skateboard, BMX and scooter competitions for all ages and abilities, professional rider demonstrations, prizes, music, and food and refreshments.
Cllr Adele Barnett-Ward, Reading’s Lead Councillor for Leisure and Culture, said: “Whitley’s brand new skatepark is a significant addition to the local community, providing a dedicated space for young people and skateboard enthusiasts to connect and learn new skills.
I’m told the rail and ledge can be used in both directions, whether you ride, ‘Goofy’ or ‘Regular’.”
