NATURE lovers are invited to enjoy one of Wokingham’s most picturesque sites this Saturday, which is National Meadows Day.
An open event will be held at Langley Mead nature reserve in Shinfield, a 18-hectare plot of countryside along the banks of the River Loddon, organised by the University of Reading who owns and manages the land.
Visitors will get the chance to learn more about the restoration of the reserve, which is open to the public throughout the year.
Langley Mead is home to a series of walking loops, wildlife habitats and areas of natural beauty. It is part of an ongoing project aimed at restoring agricultural land back into habitats for wildlife and plants.
Prof Mark Fellowes, Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University and ecologist, said: “National Meadows Day is about celebrating wildflower meadows across the UK. I am so pleased that the University of Reading is able to offer this beautiful green space to the local community, not just on National Meadows Day, but throughout the year.
“We hope lots of people can join us on Saturday, July 1, as we provide some guided walks through the nature reserve, explaining more about the plants and wildlife found there, the traditional management practices we use and our plans for the future.”
There will be a series of three guided walks over the course of the day, with an information stall and wildlife spotter sheets available for keen-eyed children, and adults.
Visitors are not required to book ahead.
The event runs from 10am-4pm.
The schedule for guided walks is as follows: Meet our Bovine Buddies at 10am, Wild about Flora and Fauna at 1pm, and The Langley Mead Extension at 3pm.
