THE SOUND of Christmas has been heard in Reading Minster across December, and last week it was the venue for the annual civic carol service.
The event was held on Thursday, December 14, presided over by the Revd Sonya Wratten, vicar of the town centre church, retold the events of the first Christmas.
The event opened with Once In Royal David’s City and included Silent Night, O Little Town of Bethlehem, O Come All Ye Faithful, and Ding Dong! Merrily On High.
Members of the Ukrainian choir Kryla sang Carol of the Bells in their native tongue, while Reading Minster’s choir performed the Sans Day Carol.
Scripture readings were by Yevhina Esivook and Caleb Gomes from Rank and File Theatre, the mayor of Reading, Cllr Tony Page, Kushinga Hare from Refugee Support Group, Pride of Reading’s Matt Whitelock, and Tom Price who represented Reading Pride.
Afterwards, seasonal refreshments were served. These were provided by The Purple Turtle.
A retiring collection was held for the Mayor’s charities and the Reading Minster Music Outreach Project.
Speaking before the service, Cllr Page said: “The Civic Carol Service is a much-loved Christmas tradition in Reading.”
