A Lush store in Reading has drawn attention for a campaign message displayed in its window warning against scapegoating migrants.
The sign reads: “Migrants are blamed to distract you, don’t fall for it.”
The message, which encourages customers to challenge narratives that unfairly blame migrant communities, has been widely shared on social media, with many praising the retailer for taking a stand against racism and misinformation.
Lush, a cosmetics company known for using its shops and advertising to promote social causes, has previously highlighted issues including environmental protection, human rights, and inclusivity.
After being posted on a local community page on Facebook, the gesture received hundreds of comments and reaction.
One resident said: “Good on them! Unfortunately, there will likely always be a contingent of those low education/intellect bigots, and those who manipulate them (to keep their power base) by pushing bigotry. Fortunately, however, they are going the way of the dinosaurs that they are.”
Another said: “The reactions to your post are pretty much as I expected. Decent people far out number the rest, even if they tend to be quieter. This is what we see in real life, much more kindness and acceptance than hostility.”
Another commenter added:”It must be great owning a brand and finding the way to make sure all your customers are smart switched on people and all the ignorant, racist bigots stay well away. Well done lush!”
However, there were also some who questioned the sign.
One said: “Playing at politics is a bold decision from a retail outlet..i was always told never to question anyone’s political leanings or religious beliefs because A: no-one cares what you think and B: You are there to sell your product, not alienate half of your clientele.”
Another added: “Omg! That’s outrageous, they should stay out of politics! Who is the manager there?”
