READING is set to light up with the spirit of Diwali as the yearly festival gets underway for another year.
South Asian dance organisation Kala The Arts is set to celebrate with dance, music, and illuminating displayes, with support from Reading’s Business Improvement District and Reading Borough Council.
After a musical introduction, a lantern parade will process along Broad Street to mark the occasion, with mechanical spectacles and traditional costumes on display.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains across the world yearly to mark new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness.
This year will also see a number of workshops taking place during the October half term.
Attendees will be able to use stencils and paint powder to create their own Rangoli art which can be taken home, and some of which will be combined to create a larger feature for the parade.
They will also get the chance to craft their own lanterns from paper and bamboo, ready for the festival, as well as the opportunity to paint a clay Diya lamp with experts providing advice.
The Diwali Workshops take place at Apex, Forbury Road, on between 10am-4pm on Tuesday, October 24.
The festival parade begins in Town Hall Square from 4pm on Saturday, October 28, and is free to attend.
