POLICE sealed off parts of Reading town centre this morning, following an assault.
Officers were seen in Friar Street close to the rear entrance of Marks & Spencer as they investigated the incident.
Although it took place just before 3am on Sunday morning (Saturday night into Sunday morning), a police cordon was not put in place until the early hours of this morning.
Thames Valley Police said this was a result of the severity of the injuries suffered by the victim during the assault, which is being treated as GBH.
The cordon was lifted shortly after 9am this morning.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police made an appeal for witnesses to come forward.
“At around 2.58am yesterday (17/3) we received reports of an assault causing grievous bodily harm on Friar Street, Reading,” they said.
“The victim, a man in his forties, was punched by a group of young men, and hit his head on the pavement.
“He suffered serious injuries, and was taken to hospital, where he remains at this time.
