READING’S celebrations lit up the town on Saturday, October 29, as Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs came together to mark the end of nearly a week of Diwali.
Kala The Arts brought the spirit of Asia to the town for the Festival of Lights, kicking off proceedings with a musical performance in Market Place.
This year’s event celebrated the theme of care for one another, for the environment, and for the self.
Global Grooves also brought three of their giant puppets, including a moving bird piece, two human figures, and a statuesque piece lit from inside.
It also featured two installations from Samesky, the largest community arts charity in the south east.
Dance formed a big part of the festival’s entertainment, with an array of traditional performances including Kala The Arts’ own dancers who were joined by children from Geoffrey Field Primary School.
As crowds processed through the town centre, children were given lanterns and Dhol drummers performed.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated yearly to mark new beginnings and the triumph of light over darkness for millions who celebrate it across the world.
