Labour pick Yuan for new seat

Members of the Labour Party have selected their candidate for the new Earley and Woodley seat.

Four competitors put their hats in the ring to become the parliamentary candidate for the new seat, which also covers Shinfield,

Yuan Yang, a Financial Times journalist and social campaigner, was selected at a party meeting over the weekend.

She said: “I was selected as the Labour Party’s parliamentary candidate for our new constituency of Earley and Woodley, my family home.

“It’s the honour of my life to stand in the next general election to build a greener, fairer future for us all.

“It’s been an incredible honour to have worked at the Financial Times for the past eight years.

“I’ve been on leave for the duration of the selection campaign, and now I’ve stepped down to campaign full-time for our new constituency.”

She then called for residents to chat, volunteer, or follow her campaign on her website.

She beat Cllr Rachel Eden (Labour, Whitley), Hanif Khan, a member of the Pakistani community and former Harrow councillor, and Annie Gallop, a Lambeth Borough councillor, to become the candidate.

She will now face cllr Pauline Jorgensen, the Conservative candidate.

Cllr Jorgensen is the leader of the opposition on Wokingham Borough Council and a representative for Hillside in Lower Earley.

The Liberal Democrats have yet to selected their candidate for the new parliamentary seat.
