Reading FC left-back Matty Carson has reflected on the campaign which saw him feature for both the first-team and Noel Hunt’s U21s side.
The full-back made 17 senior appearances throughout the 2023/24 season, 10 of which came in the league.
Despite that, he was not offered a contract extension by the club and has been released as a free agent.
Carson was one of three full-backs released by the clubs as both Nesta Guinness-Walker and Clinton Mola also depart.
“I’ve loved it here,” said Carson.
“Everyone has been brilliant, all the staff, Hunty, Ruben, Scotty JOP, Toby, I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me.
“The debut, Stevenage, Cheltenham, those games were brilliant.”
He showed his quality last week for Hunt’s U21s side by scoring a stunning free-kick in the PL2 play-off semi-finals against Sunderland as the Royals were cruelly beaten 4-3 in extra-time.
He continued: “And finally scoring at RG2, it’s been a whirlwind.
“It’s disappointing how we’ve ended it, but the lads and especially myself, can all look back with positivity.
“The fans have been so welcoming to me when I came into the team and have helped me get through some tough times.
“Coming out tonight (Monday) and supporting everyone, it’s so good to see them and make some noise.
“They were the 12th man towards the end and we really wanted to win that.”
