READING FC midfielder Charlie Savage was eager to take the positives from the team’s opening League One game and his competitive debut for the club.
Despite losing in their return to the third tier, Savage believes that the performance from Ruben Selles side was encouraging.
“It was an amazing feeling to play in front of the fans, who were excellent by the way,” said Savage.
“It will be one step at a time to build my way into the team and hopefully my performances will shine through.
“The first 20 or 30 minutes especially we were all over them. Unfortunately we didn’t have the end product but on another day we could have been two or three nil up before half–time.
Having been signed from Manchester United, Savage’s future was up in the air regarding financial issues at Reading, and was relieved to finally have his situation resolved in time to play the opening game.
He continued: “There was a bit of uncertainty at the start whether I was actually going to sign.
“If I could sign, I 100% wanted to, there was never any doubt in my mind. There was an option for United to bring me back but I stood strong and wanted to play for Reading. I was willing to wait it out and thankfully it all worked out ok.
“I could sit here and say it was all ok, but I was a bit down to be honest. It was very uncertain. I had an amazing move so to have it all up in the air was disappointing but I’m very happy we’re out of the embargo now.
“Minutes (played) is always a massive aim as well as contributing goals and assists.
“I put a few good balls into the box so hopefully those can be converted and my numbers will rack up.
“I played under a similar formation under Ralf Rangnick at Man United when I made my debut so I know the system quite well and I think it’s really effective. With the counter pressing we caught them a couple of times and it’s about executing those chances.”
