THAMES Valley Police has increased police presence in the town centre in the wake of targeted attacks in Australia in recent days.
TVP has said that it is performing dedicated patrols around Jewish places of worship, and armed officers are on patrol around the town centre in response to a mass shooting which took place in Bondi Beach, Sydney, on Sunday, December 14.
The attack, which has been designated a terrorist mass shooting, saw two gunmen open fire on members of the public.
Australian authorities ruled it as an antisemitic attack, as it took place during a Hanukkah celebration.
So far, 15 victims have been reported killed and 41 further people injured– excluding one of the gunmen, who was killed at the scene, and the other, who remains in hospital.
In the wake of the attack, TVP has extended its thoughts with those affected by the incident and the emergency responders.
Chief Superintendent Steve Raffield said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with the Jewish community, the victims, families and all affected by the terrorist incident in Australia.
“We are working closely with our partners, faith leaders and community leads to ensure our communities are safe.
“There is no intelligence to suggest any threat in the Thames Valley, but we want to ask the public to remain vigilant.”
Thames Valley Police also urges members of the public to remain alert when attending events or in public spaces: “If you see something that doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it to us.
“In an emergency, always dial 999.”
