IT MAY be hot outside but people are being urged to check their boilers ahead of colder winter days.
A lack of use during summer months means potential problems can go unnoticed which often leads to expensive call outs and repairs when boilers are needed most.
OFTEC, the leading not-for-profit trade organisation for the heating and cooking industries, recommends that households have all heating appliances and equipment serviced at least once a year by a qualified technician.
An annual inspection will include cleaning and inspection of the boiler, replacing any faulty components and checking for leaking flue gases, which could include dangerous carbon monoxide.
In addition, for the 12,000 households on heating oil in Berkshire, OFTEC advises homeowners to maintain their oil tanks, and checking for signs of rust, bulges, or strong fuel smells.
Malcolm Farrow, of OFTEC, said: “Checking your oil tank for any obvious signs of damage is a quick summer job and is as simple as tending to the weeds in your garden. It doesn’t take long but could save you a great deal of hassle in the future. OFTEC technicians also check the tank more thoroughly as part of a routine service.”
“Many households are feeling the squeeze right now and are understandably looking to reduce spending wherever possible.
“However, looking after your boiler and oil tank now will prolong the life of your heating system for many years to come.”
