THE Somme is one of the most famous yet also tragic places in military history.
Now the role of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry at the battlefield is the subject of a talk by Stephen Barker at Woodcote Village Hall.
Stephen is an independent Heritage Advisor who works with museums, universities, and other heritage organisations to design exhibitions and make funding applications.
He worked at Banbury Museum and the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum. Stephen has delivered projects for University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes University and the Battlefields Trust, among many others.
Stephen will highlight four significant battles of the campaign in which five Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light battalions fought. He explains the political and military context, yet includes a significant number of personal stories, anecdotes and legacies relating to those caught up in the actions. The talk is illustrated with contemporary and modern images, maps, photographs and ephemera.
The talk is organised by the British Modern Military History Society and starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday, September 13. Tickets cost £8, which includes a Q & A, and refreshments (beer, wine, soft drinks). Places cost £8, and payment should be made in advance.
