A WHITLEY WOOD man has been jailed for nearly four years after police found him hiding in the loft of a relative.
On November 20 last year, Jamie Banning was driving a white BMW1 series along Basingstoke Road at high speed.
He drove on the wrong side of a keep left bollard and hit a man on an ebike, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.
Banning fled, and on December 11, was found hiding in the loft of a family member. He was arrested and then charged the following day.
He pleaded guilty on March 28 to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, having no insurance, and failing to stop.
Banning was previously convicted of assaulting two officers in custody following his arrest for these driving offences.
The 30-year-old of The Mayling appeared at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, May 2, where he was sentenced to three years and nine months in jail.
He is also banned from driving for six years and 10 months. He must sit an extended test before reapplying for a driving licence.
Phil Hanham, of the Joint Roads Policing Unit at Thames Valley Police, said: “My thoughts are with the victim and his family who are tragically on a very long road to recovery.
“I would like to recognise the witnesses who stopped at the scene and the family of the victim who have been supportive of the police investigation.
“I’d also like to thank all the many officers whose dedication brought this dangerous man to justice.
“We will not tolerate behaviour such as this on our roads, and will robustly pursue and prosecute those who feel it’s acceptable to disregard the law.”
