A fundraiser has been launched to honour a crane driver from Reading who was hailed a hero after rescuing a man from a burning building.
Glen Edwards, 65, used a crane to lift a stranded man to safety during a fire at Station Hill in 2023. His quick thinking and bravery were widely praised at the time, with many crediting him with saving the man’s life.
Following his death, members of the community have now organised a fundraising appeal to give him what supporters describe as the “send-off he deserves”.
Mr Edwards’ actions during the incident drew significant attention, as he manoeuvred the crane basket to reach the trapped individual high above the ground while emergency services tackled the blaze below.
The fundraiser aims to support funeral arrangements and create a lasting tribute to his life and bravery. Supporters have described him as a “true Berkshire hero” whose actions will not be forgotten.
Tributes have continued to pour in from residents, many of whom remember the dramatic rescue and the calm, decisive response that helped prevent a tragedy.
Organisers say the response to the appeal reflects the deep appreciation felt across the community for Mr Edwards’ courage and selflessness.
