Unfortunately, many of Reading’s roads are plagued with potholes. Council figures show that the condition of major roads is getting worse. This is especially important for vulnerable road users such as cyclists. Greens have continued to report individual potholes and push for roads to be properly resurfaced.
Cllr Dave McElroy (Green Party, Redlands Ward) has been campaigning on this.
He said: “After years of underinvestment in our roads from Labour it is good to see some improvement on some of our residential roads. But there are still sections of a number of residential roads that are real hazardous bone shakers though – Palmer Park Avenue, Katesgrove Lane and Alexandra Road for example. You hit some of these holes and at best you get a flat tire, at worst you find yourself in the Earth’s molten core, halfway to China.
“The number of major roads in a poor condition has unfortunately been increasing in recent years. London Road is particularly bad. More investment is needed to create a decent, safe road surface for all. Green Party councillors will keep working to tackle potholes.”

Kate Nikulina welcomes £200,000 investment in neglected children’s play area
Green Party campaigning for investment in the neglected Waterloo Meadows children’s play area has finally paid off. The council is investing £200,000 in a new play surface and equipment. Work will start in Spring 2024.
Kate Nikulina, Green Party Katesgrove campaigner, has been working on this.
She said: “Residents have long raised the uneven play surface at the Waterloo Meadows children’s play area. The equipment is also tired and in need of replacement. We are pleased that the council has listened and is finally investing in this play area.”
Reading Council is missing 616 bin collections per month
The council is missing 616 bin collections per month, compared to their performance standard of 250 and recently we have seen an increase in people contacting us about missed collections.
Cllr Sarah Magon (Green Party, Park Ward) has been working on this issue.
She said: “Too many bin collections are being missed. This is causing frustration as well as contributing to litter and fly tipping. Greens will keep lobbying for action.”
Greens are the second largest party in Reading
As the main opposition party on Labour-run Reading Council Green councillors will continue to work constructively to get the best for Reading residents.
There are now seven Green Party councillors and we are now two councillors ahead of the Conservatives. We will keep working hard all year round on the issues that matter to residents.
