SIX BERKSHIRE community groups, including two in Reading, have been presented with The King’s Award this week.
Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire Andrew Try presented community groups with the awards on Tuesday, February 25, denoting excellence in volunteering.
The award is the equivalent of an MBE for organisations, with the work of the Award winners being judged to be of the very highest standard.
The winners were named on The King’s birthday in November last year for setting the benchmark for voluntary organisations.
Among the six winners were Cianna’s Smile, which has worked hard to build an understanding of Sickle Cell (anaemia) and its impact on individuals and families since its founding in 2012. Those with the condition often feel unsupported and find medical staff unaware of the complexities of the condition.
This group aims to reduce the isolation experienced by those affected, through a programme of events, including family days out and respite breaks.
Freely Fruity also received the award for its work in planting of fruit trees to benefit the environment, education, and contributions to food banks.
Other recipients included Loose Ends Newbury, which has worked to feed homeless and vulnerable people for more than three decades; Newbury Riding for the Disabled, providing equestrian opportunities for disabled children; Soulscape, which supports young people; and The Baby Bank, which supports children and families facing hardship.
These groups received a special commemorative crystal and a certificate signed by The King, in recognition of their outstanding contribution to their local community.
In total, 95 groups in Berkshire have been awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service since it was created by Queen Elizabeth II to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 2002.
The Awards Ceremony was attended by volunteers and supporters from the winning groups and civic dignitaries from across of the County.
The Lord Lieutenant was support by 2 Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets during the event: Leading Cadet Alisdair Shankland, Newbury Sea Cadets Warrant Officer Sam Bromham, 459 (Windsor) Squadron.
