Former Reading FC player becomes free agent after departing Championship club

Former Reading FC defender Tom McIntyre has left Portsmouth FC after the club and player agreed to mutually terminate his contract, the League One side has confirmed.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who joined Pompey from Reading in January 2024, is now a free agent, able to sign for any club outside of a transfer window.

McIntyre’s time at Fratton Park had been interrupted by a series of setbacks. After signing a two-and-a-half-year deal with an option for an additional year, he made his debut shortly after joining but suffered injury problems and struggled to secure a regular first-team place. Following loan spells at Charlton Athletic and Bradford City, McIntyre returned to Pompey in January 2026 when Bradford chose to end his loan early.

Before his move to the south coast, McIntyre was best known for his time with Reading. A product of the Royals’ academy, he signed his first professional contract in 2016 and went on to make over 100 first-team appearances for the Berkshire club. He was the 48th graduate from their youth system and quickly became a mainstay in the Reading defence, scoring his first senior goal in a league win over Luton Town in December 2020.

He signed multiple contract extensions with the Royals before his transfer to Portsmouth for a nominal fee in January 2024 while Reading were under financial constraints under former owner Dai Yongge.
