Former Reading FC defender and academy graduate Tom McIntyre has been told to find a new club this transfer window by Championship side Portsmouth.
Since departing Reading in January 2024, McIntyre has struggled for both regular game time and form on the south coast.
He left the Royals for a nominal fee but has managed to make just 13 league appearances for Pompey.
He suffered a season ending injury on his debut for the club as they went on to get promoted from League One.
He then appeared 12 times in the Championship last season before he was loaned out to Charlton Athletic for the second-half of the season and played 10 times as they won the League One play-offs.
However, it now appears that his time at Portsmouth has come to an end after being told by the club that he is not in their first-team plans.
The 26-year-old defender will be available for teams to purchase on a permanent deal, but it is also understood that they may look to loan McIntyre if a buyer is not found.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho said: “Tom is a good character and there’s no problem with him whatsoever. It’s one where we had a chat at the end of last season about his situation and if he can find something then we’d be absolutely fine with that.”
McIntyre first joined the Reading academy in 2008 and went on to make more than 100 first-team appearances from 2016-2024.
Having lost both Tyler Bindon and Amadou Mbengue this summer, the Royals have been in the market for centre-backs and have recruited former Lincoln City captain Paudie O’Connor on a four-year deal and also young Manchester City defender Finley Burns on a one-year loan.
While Reading are still active in the transfer market and looking to recruit more players to bolster the first-team, it is unclear whether they will recruit another centre-back with McIntyre seemingly on the market.
