ONE OF Reading’s former mayors and long-standing councillors has died.
Reading Borough Council has announced that Bet Tickner, who served as the mayor of Reading in 2006, has died.
She was first elected as an Abbey Ward councillor in May 2002 and served for 16 consecutive years until stepping down in May 2018.
It followed a career in journalism with the BBC, where she worked at the Caversham Park Studios, as well as a number of years on the board of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
She was also a trustee for Reading Refugee Support Group.
Bet is survived by her son, Paul, and sisters, Marion and Sue.
The mayor of Reading, Cllr Tony Page, said: “Bet was not only a colleague but also a long-standing personal friend. We worked closely together over the years to represent the interests of Abbey ward.
“Besides her obvious passion for Reading and supporting the Royal Berkshire Hospital and local NHS, Bet was also a committed internationalist and a keen supporter of the Refugee Support Group, of which she was a trustee for some years.
“Her enthusiasm and passion will be sadly missed.”
