A FAMILY-FRIENDLY day out to honour our armed forces was held in Reading’s Forbury Gardens on Saturday.
The borough council organised a host of events to pay tribute to military veterans, and let younger generations find out more about life in the army, navy, and Royal Air Force.
It was part of a national event aimed at showing appreciation to services personnel, past and present, including Reservists, veterans and cadets and their families.
Throughout the day there were performances from Diane James and her famous Vera Lynn tribute, The Silvertones, and The Barberettes.
There were stands from charity and community organisations, including the Royal British Legion, The Forgotten British Gurkha Veterans Charity, and the Reading Ex-British Gurkha Association (REBGA), as well as Sport in Mind, Jelly, SSAFA, Royal British Legion, and 7 Rifles.
A selection of refreshments were available, and some people brought picnics to enjoy.
Families were also able to enjoy balloon modelling, and face painting and an extra special art workshop from Jelly.
Mayor of Reading, Cllr Tony Page, was among those who attended.
“I was delighted to see so many people joining Reading’s celebrations honouring our veterans past and present this weekend in the Forbury Gardens,” he said. “It was a brilliant day, with so much on offer from Reading’s voluntary sector and creative organisations for visitors of all ages.
“I enjoyed a tour of the stalls with Richard Anderson, Deputy Lieutenant, accompanied by two Lord Lieutenant’s cadets on the day, Cadet Sergeant Holly Marshall and Petty Officer Cadet Natasha Sloan.
“My thanks to all of the performers who provided brilliant musical entertainment. The traditional Dhol drumming performance parading through the town centre was particularly special.”
