A CATERING company has been given the Gold Alfresco Award for 2022 for its work at Reading Festival.

Fat Harry’s, owned by Chris and Alison Haritakis, was one of the stalls selling food at the annual festival, serving smoked sausages and fresh fruit.

The outlet scored top marks at the outdoor caterer’s awards, with high standards of hygiene and management.

Reading Borough Council inspects outlets trading to the public at the event and provides a hygiene rating and safety evaluation.

Traders must pass strict criteria for standards, including provision of allergy information and health and safety compliance, with the winner of the Gold award earning a free pitch at next year’s festival.

The award also takes into account the eco-friendliness of the traders’ operation, such as the use of recyclable materials, biodegradable cleaning products, and method of staff travel and operation.

With the Gold award going to Fat Harry’s the Silver awards went to Mexitaco, and Bronze going to Loaded Fries and Nachos.

Mexicato and Loaded Fries and Nachos will both receive discounts on their pitch fees for next year’s festival.

Cllr Ruth McEwan, Lead Councillor for Education and Public Health, said: “Congratulations to Fat Harry’s, for a well-deserved award.

It’s important that people who go to the festival know that the food they are buying on site is prepared in a safe and hygienic environment.

The awards show that the quality of the catering on offer has continued to be maintained to an incredibly high standard.”

She said she would also like to congratulate the owners and staff at Mexitaco and Loaded Fries and Nachos, “as well as thank the Reading food and safety team,

“And their partners in Central Fusion and Festival Republic for all the hard work they have put into ensuring we maintain a high quality offer of food at this year’s festival.”
