A SWINDON fan who went on to the pitch during the club’s game against Reading has been banned from going to matches for three years.
The incident happened at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Tuesday, October 10, when the Royals were competing in the EFL Trophy – known as the Pizza Cup.
It was a memorable night for the home side, as they beat the Robins 5-0.
However, during the game Christopher Taylor went on to the pitch and made gestures towards the home fans. He was pelted with tennis balls.
At Reading Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, February 27, he pleaded guilty to offence.
The 43-year-old of Oakenshaw Reach, Rooksdown is now unable to attend any football matches in the UK for the next three years. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £32 and a fine of £80.
The Football Banning Order also places restrictions on Taylor attending some matches abroad. He must give police travel documents when instructed to do so and notify them of any change of name or address.
Failure to obey the order carries a sentence of up to six months’ imprisonment or a fine for each offence.
During the investigation, Taylor was voluntarily interviewed and was later charged by postal requisition on Thursday, February 8.
Thames Valley Police said they were happy with the verdict.
In a statement, investigating officer Detective Constable Bryan Groves, said: “We are very pleased with this sentence and hope that it acts as a strong deterrent for anyone who participates in such behaviour.
“This type of offence can have an impact on the thousands of people who attend football matches on a regular basis and enjoy themselves responsibly with friends and family.
“Thames Valley Police is committed to helping the clubs in our force area to keep those who commit crime away from the grounds, to ensure that supporters can enjoy the events.”
