SUPPORTERS of Extinction Rebellion will be singing ‘Crisis’ carols in Reading in aid of a local charity tackling homelessness.

Supporters of the group will be singing carols which have been amended with lyrics relevant to the climate crisis, and will be collecting donations for Launchpad.

Extinction Rebellion explains that a major reason contributing to people across the UK becoming homeless is the increase in floods and wildfires caused by human-driven climate change, which are destroying houses or rendering them unliveable.

With more unpredictable weather, heavier rainful, and more severe winter storms, the number of people affected by flooding in the UK continues to grow.

Extinction Rebellion is seeking global action to help those who suffer from climate-related homelessness–including supporting local people who are homeless, regardless of whether their situation is due to climate-related causes.

Being homeless can have a dramatic, negative impact on a person’s health and wellbeing, whatever the reason for their homelessness.

Launchpad provides a holistic service for anyone in Reading who is at risk of becoming homeless or has become homeless.

The charity helps vulnerable people in the town to tackle their housing-related problems.

Climate change is also impacting lower-income families by contributing to rising food prices, due to its negative and unpredictable impact on agricultural land worldwide.

The group argues a lack of sufficient investment in cheaper renewable energy has resulted in increasing energy prices, and that both factors are contributing to cost of living increases, which are negatively impacting people across the world.

Extinction Rebellion believes that people should not have to choose between heating their homes or feeding themselves or their families, and continue to campaign for a sustainable, liveable future through a variety of actions, including the support of Launchpad.

For the event carol singers will meet by the Queen Victoria statue in Friar Street, before moving onto further locations, including the Reading Station underpass and the Reading Minster Churchyard.

People are invited to join in with the carol singing and there will be song sheets handed out with the word variations.

The event takes place on Saturday December 13, from 10:45am.
