SOUTH READING will see the arrival of a new community event on Sunday, July 11.
The Whitley Carnival will see hundreds of performers make up two parades which will weave through the streets of the ward.
Both processions will make their way down Northumberland Avenue and Hartland Road before meeting at the John Madejski Academy, where a fun day will be held.
The event is co-organised by charities Aspire2 and the Whitley Community Development Association, with the help of members of the community.
Helen Bligh, charity development manager at Aspire2, said: “Whitley has so much talent to
offer, and this is a fantastic opportunity for the community to get together to celebrate, and for families in Reading to have some much needed fun.”
Scores of arts organisations and schools will be represented on the day, and they will make up what is set to be a joyous and colourful celebration of the past, present and future of Whitley.
Each parade will feature live music, handmade costumes, puppets and a few surprises. They are open to everyone, with participants asked to sign up with their friends and families via the event’s website.
Members of the public can also join one of the community workshops in the build-up, getting creative with costumes and props.
There will also be opportunities to volunteer on the day or to run stalls at the fun day.
The event kicks off at noon.
