Woodley residents are being hit with a ‘phantom menace’ in the form of two-month-long road works, a councillor has said.
Colemansmoor Road between Loddon Bridge Road and Rivermead Road is closed until June 23.
First closed on Monday, April 14, SGN are replacing old metal pipework with more durable plastic.
Wokingham Borough Council has advised drivers to divert during the gas main replacement.
The Reading Bus 13/14 loop that connects Woodley to Reading town centre is being detoured down Colesmansmoor Lane.
Cllr Greg Bello, member for Woodley, has criticised the timing of the works falling at the Easter bank holiday and break for schools.
Cllr Bello said: “Residents constantly complain about the phantom menace: traffic lights and road closures left out but no one doing any work.
“Often these lights are set up a day or two before work begins. It might be convenient for the utility firms, but it certainly isn’t convenient for residents.”
Cllr Bello said it would have been more convenient for the works to take place in July and August when there are less children using the bus services to get to school.
A pedestrian walkway has been put on Colemansmoor Road.
A spokesperson from SGN said: “We know that roadworks can be frustrating, but our essential work keeps you, your family and local community safe.”
