READING Borough Council has announced that it has received a record number of nominations for the Reading Sports Awards 2024.

More than 100 nominations have been put forward ahead of the awards set to take place in December.

The awards recognise sports clubs, schools, colleges, and exceptional individuals who have had a special sporting achievement or for their long service in the field.

This year, organisers welcome global sports marketing agency rEvolution as sponsors of the awards, and mental health charity Sport in Mind is also a partner in the event.

The twelve categories are Improver of the Year, Club Person of the Year, Katie Henderson Memorial Trophy for Commitment to Sport, Veteran of the Year, Mayor’s Award, Helper/Loyalty Award, School Personality of the Year, Junior Team of the Year, Team of the Year, Club of the Year, and Junior Sports Personality of the Year.

The event culminates with the main award, the Sports Personality of the Year, also known as the Richard Burns Memorial Trophy.

The award honours Reading-born British rally driver Richard Burns who sadly died in 2005.

A judging panel is now sorting through the nominations, with the winners set to be announced at a special ceremony at the Hilton Reading Hotel on 10 December.

Cllr Glenn Dennis, Mayor of Reading, said: “We are thrilled to see so many nominations sent in for this year’s 2024 Reading Sports Awards.

“I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to put forward their favourite clubs, schools, colleges and individuals for recognition.

“The awards are a celebration of sporting achievements in Reading and I know there are many dedicated people who are out there working hard week after week and who deserve there time in the spotlight.

“I am delighted that we are welcoming rEvolution as sponsors of this year’s event and would like to thank them and all the other supporters who make the Reading Sports Awards possible.”

Chris Hughes, of rEvolution, said: “rEvolution is proud to have one of our European offices in Reading. We are a global business, but we want to ensure we are playing an active role in the incredible sport that is taking place on our doorstep.

“We are honoured to be sponsoring this year’s Reading Sports Awards, to showcase the very best sporting talent in and around the town, and to share the most inspiring sporting stories. There are some incredible nominees, and we look forward to celebrating their successes on December 10.”
