NOT ALL wrapping paper is equal, says Wokingham Borough Council.
It advises residents to consider avoiding buying wrapping paper that included glitter, plastic lamination or metallic foil, none of which can be recycled locally.
The council explains that plain or patterned paper without plastic is best, and says that a scrunch test can help residents know whether the product will be recyclable.
To find out, people can scrunch the paper into a ball.
If it stays scrunched, it can usually be recycled.
But if it springs back, it will need to be put out with rubbish.
People are asked to remove all ribbons, bows and sticky tape before recycling their wrapping paper, and to consider using paper tape instead, which peels cleanly, or to reuse gift bags.
Paper should be kept dry and placed loosely in residents’ green recycling bags.
Taking a little extra care will make a big difference to the quality of recycling, says the council.
