Budding artists bloom at Rising Sun student showcase

STUDENTS from Reading College held an art showcase in The Rising Sun Arts Centre.

The event saw design students from the college collect and curate their own work to be displayed in a public exhibition, giving them a chance to gain experience in staging arts events and engaging with the public.

Pieces included clothing designed and modified by the students, as well as print pieces, sculpture, and other textiles work.

The showcase explored the theme of “Organic,” examining natural forms through a range of artistic techniques.

Gayle Payne, one of the Art teachers at Reading College, said: “Design students from Reading College do work experience and employability events as part of their curriculum, and we saw an opportunity for them to put a show together.

“They were 100% involved in gathering and curating the works, putting it all together and invigilating the event, to help them understand what the wider art industry looks like and give them some experience.”

“They were only booked in for a few hours, but they all stayed for the whole day because they really enjoyed being in that environment and getting to talk to other creatives.

“The volunteers at the centre are very involved with the art scene, including a few university students, and they were having conversations with students about becoming volunteers.

“It shows the students that there are opportunities to be had.”

She also said that there was a particularly positive response from attendees at the showcase.

“There were lots of great comments about the diversity of the materials and pieces we had, and lots of interest in the individual pieces.

“It’s given us lots of ideas for a future show, which we’d like to put together for a show next year.

“It’s great to see people engaging with the art, especially young children who created their own pieces from the artworks.

“There’s also a monthly art market coming to the Rising Sun, which we’d love to work alongside.”
