A marriage of craft and technology is coming to The Base Greenham this summer, thanks to artist Alastair Duncan’s new Interactive Tapestry Weaving Exhibition.
Visitors to the gallery can enjoy an integration of texture and sound in a series of interactive tapestries when the exhibition opens on Friday 7 June.
“Working across fibre, photography and sound, Duncan takes enjoyment from the textural and rhythmic aspects of weaving,” a representative from The Base explained. “He explores themes that include landscape, architecture, conflict, communication and interconnection.”
Visitors are encouraged to interact with and explore the artwork, which can be activated physically through touch or proximity. This triggers sensors to play soundscapes, some of which evoke the Welsh countryside while others play manipulated dialogue that acts as ghost-like traces of interactions.
“Given the barriers that often exist in galleries, where touching work is discouraged or policed, Duncan is bringing yet another sensory experience into his work.”
Inspired by the exhibition, The Base has developed a range of workshops and courses for all ages to enjoy.
On Sunday, June 9, take part in the Learn to Weave a Scarf workshop – run by Emma Baker and Gillian Siggers of TabbyandTweed – to learn loom weaving and make your own creation from British wool.
The Base’s resident artist Samantha Emmons will also lead two Experimenting with Textiles and Textures workshops on Sunday 23 June. Participants will be able to play with shapes and patterns found in maps to explore a variety of mixed media techniques, including textiles, paints and dry materials. These workshops also include entry to the main exhibition so you can be inspired by Alastair’s creations.
For those wanting to hear the stories behind his work, Alastair will be hosting a talk on Thursday 27 June, where he will share insights into his creative process and explain more about how he brings his art, craft and technology together.
