There are various “free” will schemes available throughout the year, and indeed Rowberry Morris often partners with Naomi House to offer a basic will in exchange for a donation. We are glad to support this cause and to encourage people to make a will.
You might also leave a donation to the charity in your will, simply because you want to, or for inheritance tax planning purposes. Charity legacies are free of inheritance tax, and do not use up your other tax free allowances. If your estate is subject to inheritance tax and you leave enough money to charity, the inheritance tax rate is reduced from 40% to 36%.
You might wonder how a charity knows it has been left a legacy. There is a company which checks each grant of probate and writes to the charity. The charity will then contact the executor.
This means that as an executor you need to work with the charities, keeping them informed of progress, and, if they have been left a percentage of the estate, involving them in the decisions about the sale of the assets. You may also need to plan carefully to utilise the charity exemptions from income tax and capital gains tax.
Please contact us if you would like to make a will including a charity or are an executor of a will with charity beneficiaries.
