Former Reading FC player Garath McCleary was left ‘overwhelmed’ by the reception that he received from the home fans during their game with Wycombe Wanderers.

McCleary made a successful return to the Select Car Leasing Stadium with the Chaibroys who took three points with a 2-1 win.

After the game, McCleary posted a heartfelt message to the Reading fans and thanked them for their support after he received a standing ovation from the home crowd after he was subbed off.

He said: “Take the result away, what I saw today I was genuinely overwhelmed. Maybe from the covid year it was the bit of closure I needed, 8 years this place was my home.

“I thank you and wish you all every success for the rest of the season @ReadingFC #royals #readingfc #urzzz.”

McCleary joined Reading, who at the time were in the Premier League, from Nottingham Forest in 2012 and spent eight years in Berkshire.

The winger played a total of 270 games for the Royals and scored 27 times in all competitions before enduring what was a disappointing end to his time in Berkshire.

McCleary found himself frozen out with the club keen to reduce their wage bill which left him as a peripheral figure in his final season at the club.

He then joined Wycombe in 2020 and is now in his fourth season with the club.
