ON THE same day that a cute furry alien was revealed by Doctor Who to be a blood-thirsty murderer, Reading Museum hosted an exploration of monsters in video games.

Visiting from Charles University in Prague, Dr Jaroslav Švelch hosted Player vs. Monster, a look at 50 years of video games, their characters and our reactions to it.

It was based on a book of the same name, which covers everything from dragons in early tabletop role-playing games and the pixelated aliens of Space Invaders to the malformed mutants of The Last of Us and the bizarre beasts of Bloodborne.

With examples including aliens and zombies, Dr Švelch gave a thought-provoking session that touched on how

Covering example the medium could evolve to present more nuanced depictions of monstrosity.

The event took place at Reading Museum in Blagrave Street on Saturday.
