Sixteen young people from across Berkshire took centre stage as budding journalists last Saturday, joining a media masterclass to learn the craft of storytelling, press writing, and interview skills.

The session, run by Berkshire scouts at the Reading Biscuit Factory, was designed to equip participants with essential communications skills and to develop a unique insight into the world of media and journalism.

Those attending had the chance to meet reporter and photojournalist Andrew Batt to learn about his personal experiences working for Wokingham Today and Reading Today.

The workshop was run by Chris Hughes – the communications manager for Berkshire Scouts – alongside a team of volunteers keen on helping the Scouts develop their ability to represent themselves. After listening to Andrew insightful talk on the print and digital media landscape, they threw themselves into a range of interactive activities.

Together, the scouts wrote thoughtful press releases, got to know each other in playful interviews, and brainstormed new ways to shape Berkshire Scouts’ adult volunteer recruitment drive.

Scout Ben said: “It was good. It was interesting to see what skills I should have in the future for journalism. Andrew was interesting.”

Local volunteer Daniel Tapp attended a similar workshop run by Chris four years ago when he was an Explorer Scout and has since joined the Berkshire Scouts communications team.

He said: “Having the chance to mentor the next generation of communicators was an amazing feeling.

“I’ve seen firsthand how these workshops inspire Scouts, and I trulyrecommend sharing your skills as an adult volunteer.

“It takes you to amazing places”

Events like the media masterclass are at the heart of what scouts does – building confidence, employability, and real-world skills in young people. Adults with skills to share are encouraged to explore volunteering with Berkshire Scouts.
