Reading FC manager Ruben Selles confirmed that the club ‘cannot’ get any players until the takeover situation is resolved.
The Royals are currently under a transfer embargo which limits them to only signing free agents or loans, however they cannot complete any deals until the club has been sold by Dai Yongge.
Former Wycombe Wanderers chairman Rob Couhig is currently in pole position to finalise a deal to buy the club.
Speaking after Reading’s pre-season friendly victory over Championship side QPR, Selles said: “Realistically, we’re in a situation where we cannot get any players.
“Not only because of the transfer embargo but because the EFL say until the takeover is happening, we cannot get any players in until the budget is confirmed.
“Myself, I don’t expect anything at all like I didn’t expect last season.
“I just try to get the very best out of the players available and try to get some of the young players with us to see which ones are ready to play for us and develop with us.”
The Royals have had several promising academy products competing in the pre-season fixtures so far including: Emmanuel Oho, Andre Garcia, Abraham Kanu and striker Jayden Wareham, who featured sporadically for the first-team last campaign.
