Assisting Berkshire Children to Read (ABC to Read) is an award-winning charity that supports children who are struggling to read by finding, training and supporting volunteers to work with them in primary schools around Berkshire.
They are looking for caring volunteers to become reading helpers, boosting students’ confidence and helping them directly in one-to-one sessions outside of the classroom environment to give students the opportunity to catch up.
They recruit, train and support community volunteers who ideally dedicate two sessions per week (although one session a week will also be considered), during term time only, for at least a year, reading, chatting and playing games.
Their next training session is set for Wednesday, May 8, from 10am to 1pm.
ABC to Read also has an employee volunteering scheme and welcomes approaches from companies.
Since March 1987, The Link Café is a community project involving Churches in Tilehurst, organised and run by volunteers. It is a Christian Coffee Shop and Meeting Place.
Have you got a few hours free?
Why not join The Link Café’s dedicated team of volunteers to cook and serve food. Various tasks include: Setting up the café before opening, Taking orders from customers and passing them to the kitchen, Delivering orders to customers at the tables and other catering tasks.
What is in it for you?
You’ll have a hands-on working understanding and knowledge of food safety and hygiene rules in a café setting and its importance.
There are plenty of opportunities for applying good communication skills with staff and customers and the experience would be a great addition to your CV.
Enrych Berkshire is an organisation that provides people with disabilities extra support to help them to enjoy hobbies, interests and activities of their choosing.
Enrych is currently recruiting a volunteer to support a member, that has previously suffered a stroke, that lives near Reading West Station. They would appreciate somebody to accompany them outside on short walks in the local area. They use a wheelchair for any distance.
Alternatively, volunteers can assist in the garden with them, small tasks such as light weeding whilst enjoying a chat.
Take a look at our Reading Volunteer Connect platform for details of these and many more opportunities to volunteer via our website, www.rgneeds.me. Want to get in touch? Drop us an email at volunteering@rva.org.uk or call 0118 937 2273.
