THE ORGANISER of a vegan festival said the day was ‘absolutely fantastic’.
The sixth annual event took over Market Place and Broad Street on Saturday for a day of food and fun.
It was opened by Peter Egan, an actor famous for several big roles including Downtown Abbey. He is also an animal rights activist.
The event saw more than 50 stalls take part, offering a wide range of vegan foods, ethical products and gifts, showcasing everything about a meat-free lifestyle.
There was also a programme of talks and workshops, including a set from comedian Carl Donnelly, which took place in The Market House.

Children had their own activities including face painting, craft workshops and story times.
Sarah Zeneli, from Sparkle Vegan Events, was thrilled with the day.
“It went really, really well, we saw thousands of people attending,” she said. “There were lots of comments from people saying they were enjoying the atmosphere and the variety of stalls on offer.
“Some of the stalls sold out – the vegan cheese stall was one. Some stallholders told me it was the best day they’d ever had.”
Ms Zeneli said she had had good feedback about the extension of the festival into Broad Street. “They were excited to see the festival go on,” she said.
Peter Egan was a great guest, she added. “People were happy to meet him. He also took his time to visit the stalls, as did the mayor who enjoyed trying something new.”

Every year, Ms Zeneli said, the festival grows – “it beats my expectations” – and she is now looking ahead to the Forbury Vegan Fiesta, which will take place in April. Before then, there is the monthly vegan market in Wokingham.
So why does she think there is a growth in attendance?
“More people are trying it, know someone who is vegan, or want to cut down on their meat or dairy consumption,” she explains. “It has an environmental impact, and an impact on their health as well.
“People also want to try something new and support small businesses.”
