BIG Brother may be watching you – but probably not if you live in Reading.
A new survey claims the town has the third fewest number of CCTV cameras in the UK.
Reading does make it into the top ten locations for having the highest number of police officers.
However, that doesn’t prevent the Whitley postcode RG2 0, from being the most burgled in the country. It covers the wards of Abbey, Katesgrove, and Whitley. Per 1,000 of their 5,727 population, there were around 27 burglaries over the 12 months period in the survey.
The mixed results in the survey by security experts, ADT, also reveal the startling news that “where police force numbers are higher, crime is much more likely to be lower”.
Concerned householders and burglars alike responded to the findings.
One man wearing a mask and a striped shirt who asked not to be identified by his real name, Knuckles McSteal, said: “It would be helpful if the survey revealed which streets don’t have CCTV.
“I’m concerned Reading now has such a high number of Old Bill. I’m thinking of taking Norman Tebbit’s advice and getting on a stolen bike to look for work elsewhere.
“The cost of living crisis is making my job harder as people have less money which means there are fewer things to steal.”
And a worried homeowner also expressed concern: “I heard CCTV cameras are being stolen to order and it seems Reading is a prime hot spot.
“Crime is a big issue where I live. The cops are hunting a thief they call the Birthday Party Crook. There are some bad people out there but this one takes the cake.”
