Reading FC manager Ruben Selles admitted that he has faced a ‘dilemma’ after the recent effort of Royals fans to raise money for the club.
The club had to raise around £1million to avoid another points deduction after a shortfall for the month of March which prompted Reading fans to play a pivotal role in helping to generate funds.
Reading did manage to raise enough money to avoid any repercussions, which is believed to have been provided by the unnamed group who have signed exclusivity over a potential takeover.
Despite being grateful to the fans for their generosity, Selles said it should not be up to them to have to donate their money.
He said: “I like the things they are doing and how they care for the team.
“There are some points that we have discussed among the technical staff and I don’t think it’s fair that we should ask money for supplies. Sometimes it’s you asking for charity.
“The fans do it with the best intention to support their club but some of the things I will not want to accept as a person because that money should be better employed in other persons that need it more than we need to pay our hotel or something.”
“For me it’s a dilemma in that sense because I know they want to support the club.
“But I think at the end of the day we have an ownership and a management that should take care of the club and we should not rely on the charity of the fans and using their feelings to get them to pay something because someone has not been able to run the club properly.”
Reading are back in League One action tomorrow when they face Northampton Town at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
With just seven games to go the Royals sit six points above the drop zone and are in need of points if they are to avoid a second successive relegation.
After Friday’s game, Reading make the trip to face promotion chasing Bolton Wanderers on Monday.
