READING FC boss Ruben Selles believes there is still room for improvement despite the team’s 5-1 thrashing of Carlisle United.

The Royals made it back-to-back wins to lift themselves off the bottom of the League One table with a Harvey Knibbs double and goals from Lewis Wing and Femi Azeez.

“The result was good and to score that amount of goals is always difficult, but I still feel that we can do better,” said Selles.

“After the first goal and the start of the second-half we need to control better.

“We are in a much better position than we were one month ago. In those games and moments we conceded and today we didn’t today and as a collective we all learned to manage those moments.

“We know we have potential to score goals and compete against any team. It was a pleasure to have a calm end to the game.”

The Royals did endure some nervy moments after the restart, but managed to overcome that and put seal on a big win.

Selles continued: “Many times we have been in situations where we have been punished.

“At the corner kick Jeriel knew what was his role and was in the perfect position because that’s what we planned for it.

“We know when they tired to chase that we could find the space to counter attack and make attacks in their back line and that’s how we closed the game.”

The Royals boss also commented on Femi Azeez who broke his long scoring drought with Reading’s fifth goal of the evening.

He continued: “I think for Femi it’s a big relief. The pass from Ben Elliott was just class and he finished with power and anger to put the ball in the net to finally break that bad moment he has had in front of goal.

“Besides the goals he has been doing a really good job for us and has been a player that understands what we want to do. He had a couple of assists in the last game and I’m pleased he finally got his mojo back. We hope he can keep it and score and assist more for us.”

Selles also praised Knibbs who has adapted into a central role having played most of his football in a Reading shirt on the left-wing until recently.

He said: “We had always been thinking about him as a winger. We were reviewing and saw in Cambridge he had played that position in a 5-3-2.

“He has been growing in that role and in my opinion is a much better player in that central space. He can run, go deep, defend, win duels, tackle and his pressures are one of the best the amount of times he wins the ball back.

“We’re very pleased with his work and won’t forget that he is a player that pays every detail in his life to be ready to perform and is an example for all of the young boys.”
