READING’S roads are the slowest in the country, a new survey has said.

Temporary car insurance company Tempcover has released figures showing that the town has the slowest-moving A-roads in England.

The survey incorporated government provisional estimates for road traffic, traffic projections from the RAC, and figures of the average hours lost by drivers to traffic as logged by Inrix.

The average road speed on A roads in each location was calculated and ranked.

Reading was found to have the lowest average speed on A-roads of 13mph, followed by Nottingham at 13.5mph, and Southampton at 13.6mph.

London ranked fourth with an average of 13.8mph, Plymouth and Manchester ranked joint fifth, both with 15.3mph, and Hull ranked 7th with 15.6mph.

Liverpool and Bristol were joint ninth-slowest with 16.1mph.

Reading also ranked 10th for time lost to traffic, with drivers losing 50 hours annually to congestion.

Jake Lambert, an expert at Tempcover, said: “Spending hours stuck in traffic can lead to driver fatigue and reduced concentration.

“Temporary car insurance offers a practical solution, giving drivers the flexibility to car share and let someone else take the wheel.

“This helps lighten the load and reduce stress, particularly when facing unexpected congestion.”

He explained: “Adding a trusted friend or family member as a legal driver through temporary car insurance doesn’t just take the pressure off, it also contributes to fewer cars on the road.

“Whether it’s sharing a long drive with a sibling or stopping safely to swap seats with a friend, it’s a practical way to make travel less stressful and ensure a safer journey to your destination.”
