A READING student received exciting news while serving on a four-week humanitarian expedition in Malawi with the Scouts.
Sixteen year old Lorenzo Del Freo from Wokingham, a pupil at Reading Blue Coats School, was helping with educational and community projects when he heard that he had obtained 12 Grade 9 GCSEs.
A delighted Lorenzo said: “I was so happy.
“I truly couldn’t have done it without the support of my teachers and head of year, Ms Plowman.”
Lorenzo studied every day to gain his GCSE’s, said his mum, Monica.
“He really worked hard – it wasn’t just a last minute sprint for him, and the reason he was pleased in the end was because of the effort he had put in.
“I’m proud of him.”
Lorenzo is passionate about international relations and hopes one day to work for the United Nations or the Foreign Office.
Monica said: “his enthusiasm for this began at Reading Blue Coat School through its Model United Nations programme, led by Teacher Ms R. Clamp.
“She has been a great source of inspiration, leading it brilliantly, and inspring Lorenzo to want to work for the United Nations.”
Lorenzo has been a Scout member since he was five, and Monica says the Scouting Association has been shaping his values ever since.
“He has fundraised for the Malawi trip, supported by his Yately Scouts pack all year long for this expedition, while committing to his studies.
“There are kind people out there willing to put time and energy into helping youngsters get where they want to be,” she said.
“There is truly hope out there for young people to dream.”
As well as the support Lorenzo received from his school and from Yateley Scouts, Wokingham Lions and Yateley and District Lions have also helped to fund his Malawi expedition.
