A chain cafe at a busy retail park in Reading has closed down around a year after opening.
American coffee chain Starbucks opened last September at the Brunel Retail Park in Whitley.
It took over the cafe unit previously occupied by Costa Coffee, which closed earlier in 2024.
However, the Starbucks cafe was seen closed on Wednesday, October 16, with the news coming amid nationwide closures announced last month.
The company is closing its cafes across the world, including North America.
In a statement, Starbucks said: “In Europe, the Middle East & Africa (EMEA), we have conducted a review of our company-operated store portfolio with the goal of ensuring that our stores are correctly located, generating appropriate levels of foot traffic and operating in the right formats.
“While the EMEA business is on track to meet its commitment to open 80 new stores in the UK and 150 across EMEA this financial year, some stores in the UK, Switzerland and Austria will close as a result of this portfolio review.”
Starbucks won planning permission to replace the Costa Coffee branding with its green and white siren logo last August.
Permission for the advertising was granted by Reading Borough Council’s planning department.
No plans for a new operator to take over the unit have been submitted yet.
It comes as Starbucks closed its kiosk at the upper mall of The Oracle this year, as well as its cafe next to Vue cinema in April 2024.
The chain retains its cafes at the Butter Market, Reading Station and its drive-thru at the Reading Link Retail Park.
