Hong Kong pro-democracy supporters were out in force in Reading last weekend.
Hong Kong media tycoon and British citizen Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to 20 years in prison under the Hong Kong National Security Law, imposed by Beijing.
That ruling has sparked anger among Hongkongers in the UK, including those in Wokingham and Reading.
On February 29, a Hong Kong pro-democracy group based in Wokingham and Reading held a street exhibition and protest on Broad Street in Reading.
Several members of parliament and borough councillors were invited to attend, with the aim of raising greater awareness among the British public.
Andy Ng Siu-hong, a participant in the Hong Kong pro-democracy group and a former Hong Kong district councillor who was forced to leave Hong Kong for safety reasons, is now a Liberal Democrats borough councillor in Wokingham,
He said:“The Chinese Communist Party has ignored its commitments to the UK government and has, for years, suppressed Hong Kong’s democracy and freedoms, arresting and imprisoning pro-democracy figures.
“Whether you are a British resident from Wokingham, Reading, or Hong Kong, let us stand together and speak out to defend our shared core values of democracy, human rights, and freedom.”
