PROGRESS Theatre is embracing Halloween with its latest production, which sees Shakespeare imbued with the spirit of slasher movies.
Titus Andronicus, one of the Bard’s bloodiest plays, is set to come to the stage next week with a modern revamp.
Progress’ take infuses the gory revenge piece with 80s horror, a revitalised soundtrack, a PVC-clad goth aesthetic, heaps of twisted metal, and flashes of gore.
The play follows the titular Titus who returns from the war with his prisoners, as his brother Marcus wants him proclaimed emperor.
Titus declines in favour of Saturninus, who takes Tamora, the Goth Queen as his bride.
Tamora seeks revenge on Titus, and her daughters, encouraged by the evil Aaron, savagely assault Lavinia, Titus’ daughter.
From there, the violence only escalates to a gruesome and tragic finale.
Titus Andronicus is showing at Progress Theatre from Monday-Saturday, October 27-November 1.
Due to the nature of this production, there is no Relaxed Performance.
The production depicts violent and graphic scenes which may upset some people – audience members should check a full list of content warnings via the Progress Theatre website.
