A new app has been launched with the aim of enhancing community recycling efforts.
re3, the waste management partnership between Bracknell Forest, Reading, and Wokingham Borough Councils, has announced a collaboration with start-up Scrapp.
From today, residents can download the free recycling app that has been designed to help with recycling and waste reduction in an accessible, engaging and user-friendly way.
Founded on the principle of making recycling simple for everyone, the Scrapp mobile app empowers individuals to make a positive impact every day.
With more than 36 million products in the database, it enables users to scan product bar codes to offer instant, location-specific recycling guidance.
The app encourages users to search for recycling guidance on items they are unsure of and provides easy access to all local waste services.
The app will soon also feature bin reminders, helping to further prompt and motivate users to recycle.
The re3 partnership processes more than 180,000 tonnes of waste every year. According to the recent composition analyses of residual bins, as much as 45,500 tonnes of recyclable materials are currently disposed of in general waste.
In addition, the latest WRAP’s Recycling Tracker suggests that 81% of UK households are unintentionally contaminating their recycling bins, on average disposing of 5.4 items incorrectly due to lack of information or confusion, with each collection.
These findings highlight the need for clarity around recycling which should be able to improve everyone’s recycling habits.
Scrapp and re3 are addressing this challenge head-on by combining their expertise in technology and local waste management.
Evan Gwynne Davies, CEO of Scrapp, said: “We are excited to collaborate with re3, aiding the residents of Bracknell Forest, Reading, and Wokingham Boroughs in achieving their waste minimisation goals.
“This partnership has inspired us to continue the development of our mobile app, with new and exciting features like residential bin day reminders, custom notifications, and an intuitive search feature. Users can scan or search their waste to receive localised recycling guidance at their fingertips.
“Our team is working to add 10,000 new products every month.
“We firmly believe that collective, small actions can create a massive impact.
“Together, we can build a sustainable future where resources are valued and preserved.”
The Scrapp app is free to everyone and is available via the App Store or Google Play.
The app is replacing the current bespoke re3cyclopedia app. Users of the current app are asked to download the Scrapp app supported by re3.
